Moxa Boats for Hemorrhoids and Gynecological Health

This technique uses the smoke from moxa (the Chinese herb mugwort) to help decrease hemorrhoids (and the associated itching) and warm and clear the inside of the pelvis for gynecological issues.

This is an alternative to the popular med spa practice of vaginal steaming, but with inexpensive materials in your home’s bathroom. Using the moxa herb this way is traditionally used to treat hemorrhoids, pelvic pain/spasm, infertility, and menstrual problems, especially from having cold or congestion trapped in the area.

Make your moxa boat: Cut a ½ inch piece off a moxa cigar. Place this small piece inside a disposable cupcake paper, light both ends with a match or lighter until smoke emerges. Place boat in toilet water. Sit on the seat with a towel or emergency blanket covering your lap and all openings to the bowl. The more you seal the smoke in, the more effect it has on your tissues. Sit for 10-15 minutes until the ½ inch moxa burns through. Flush cigar piece down the toilet and throw away the cupcake paper.

Repeat daily until symptoms are resolved.

Note: Ventilate the room if desired to decrease smell and remove any towels or rugs if you don’t want them to take on the smoke smell.

The cheaper the moxa, the more smell and smoke you get. The $20 range will get you a product with a more mellow smell and less smoke, which some people prefer for daily use.
