Hand Care: Prevent Winter Dryness

Dry, chaffed, and cracked hands are a common complaint during winter.

Here are ways to keep your hands happy in the cold months:

1)      Protect the skin’s natural oils and moisture

Always wear gloves outside: the cold air sucks the moisture out of skin.

Wear gloves while you work: Washing dishes and doing other chores can chaff and dehydrate skin.

Opt for body temperature water to wash your hands and shower, hot water can strip moisture.

Use soap that is Ph balanced to the skin at 6.5 (like Dove or organic brands)- most soaps are at 11 Ph.

Always wear sunscreen!

2)      Use a heavy (high fat) moisturizer twice per day (and as needed after washing hands) like organic coconut oil, beef tallow lotion, or Shiunko barrier cream (sesame-based).

3)      Look at your diet if your skin is dry:

-Avoid caffeine and other stimulants and ice

-Eat foods that build your blood supply: small portions of red meat and cooked deep green veggies like collards or kale.

Other yin-nourishing foods: Organic collagen, red dates (jujube) in paste or made into a hydration beverage by simmering 3 or 4 in 6 cups of drinking water for half an hour.

Bean

Adzuki, black beans, black soya, kidney, lima, mung

Bean Products

Tofu

Nuts and seeds

Coconut milk, sesame seed, black sesame seed, walnut

Fish

Fish in general but especially clam, fresh water clam, crab, cuttlefish, oyster, octopus, sardine

Meat

Beef, duck, goose, pork, pork kidney, rabbit

Dairy

Cheese, chicken egg, cows milk, duck egg
